Preparing to Cruise
“A journey is measured in friends, rather than miles”
Tim Cahill
As the preparations moved forward for the Holland America,82 day cruise in Asia and the South Pacific,
I can admit to being overwhelmed by the many things to do. Visas, Prescriptions, Shore Excursions and PACKING.On this cruise there are cool waters and later warm temperatures,11 theme nights, an overnight shore excursion to see the terra cotta warriors and other mind boggling adventures.
The most wonderful thing is having your suitcases picked up from home and delivered to the ship.
Always consider this possibility because you can track the luggage and have peace of mind regarding its arrival.
Prepaying credit cards and letting them know of your impending travel is important,as well as notifying your bank.Order any currency in advance from your bank so you will have a stash ready for fun and/or souvenirs.
The pesky cell phone plan is difficult to navigate. If you are staying on the cruise for the full long voyage you will want to purchase their internet package, but to call you will need to have an international calling plan when you disembark at ports. Just study your options in advance so you won’t suffer sticker shock when you finally return home and see your billing.
Start planning at least one month in advance for special items, extra pair of eyeglasses, portable walker, collapsible cane, hearing aid batteries. Talk with your doctor regarding any immunizations you might need, flu shot, pneumonia, malaria, etc. Also ask your doctor for antibiotics such as a Z Pak for that just in case scenario.
The US Post Office has a service that bundles your mail weekly and forwards to a trusted friend or relative.
Now the packing-too much, too little or just right? Hang clothing on the door,a rack or lay on a flat surface but place them where you can see them.Start with evening or dinner wear, hang the outfit with any required accessories(for gents this can mean tie, ascot, cufflinks, belt).I place my jewelry in a little bag right with the clothing so I won’t forget what goes with what. Then I proceed to daywear-again separating by color, navy, black tan, etc. This way you can see if there is a coordinated effect and if you have brown pants but nothing to wear with them.Next specialty wear, swimming, exercise,or other special items to be included-don’t forget the shoes:athletic, dress, casual, spa shoes. Finally personal items such as nightwear and underwear.Last but not least, what outerwear do you need and of course never ever travel without a scarf or shawl.
After all this the over the counter meds and RX meds go in the carry on,along with your itinerary and PASSPORT.
Looking forward to hearing your travel prep tips. Happy Sailing.
